Joe Russo has revealed to IGN that Avengers: Infinity War will find Earth's Mightiest Heroes "at their lowest, at their worst."

United we stand, divided we fall. That’s the tagline that accompanied Captain America Civil War earlier this year – and boy, did Joe and Anthony Russo’s sequel deliver on that promise.

Pushing Earth’s Mightiest Heroes to the absolute brink, the events that transpired thrust a wedge between many of the core characters on that superhero roster – Tony Stark and Steve Rogers in particular – and it remains to be seen whether some of the damage is beyond repair.

One thing’s for sure, though; by the time Avengers: Infinity War launches in 2018, moviegoers will be seeing Iron Man and Co. “at their lowest and at their worst,” which doesn’t exactly bode well given that Josh Brolin’s Mad Titan is right around the corner.

Chatting with IGN, the Russo brothers pointed to how this fractured spirit opens up a wealth of storytelling potential, with Infinity War set to up the stakes from Civil War quite considerably – Thanos is, after all, held up as the greatest threat the universe has ever faced.

Here’s what Joe Russo had to share:

“Part of what excited us about how we could end ‘Civil War,’ and the fact that there is this divide between Cap and Tony and their relationship that will be very, very difficult for them to ever repair, the fact that the Avengers are divided in two and half of them are now wanted by the law and the other fact are not too comfortable with their fate moving forward, and the fact that Thanos and the Infinity War are coming — the greatest threat the universe has ever seen is going to come at the moment where the Avengers are arguably at their lowest, at their worst, at their least strong and most divided since they’ve been formed — that for us was a very exciting place for us to be as storytellers because of the vulnerable nature of our heroes in that kind of a situation. For us, as we move forward into ‘Infinity War,’ the condition of the Avengers is very much an important part of how that story starts and what dangers they face moving forward.”

Avengers: Infinity War is booked in for theatrical release on May 4, 2018. It’ll feature a handful of new cameos, not to mention the inclusion of the Guardians of the Galaxy. Its sequel, previously titled Infinity War – Part 2, is set to get a new moniker, though there’s no development on that front as of yet.
