Last time Polyphony Digital posted a status report on Gran Turismo Sport, it estimated that the racing facsimile was around 70 percent complete. With a tentative November release date in place, said update sparked some apprehension among the franchise’s loyal community that Sport would be ready in time for launch. It now appears those concerns weren’t too far off base.
Taking to PlayStation Blog this morning, Founder of GT studio Polyphony Digital Kazunori Yamauchi confirmed that Gran Turismo Sport has now been postponed into 2017. Citing heightened expectations – among “fans and from within our team” – and the massive development task that Sport entails, there was no mention of a new release date, but it seems that those holding out for Gran Turismo‘s long-awaited debut on PlayStation 4 will have to wait a little while longer.
Per PS Blog:
We’ve been excited and humbled by the response each time that we’ve shared new gameplay with everyone. However, as we approach our planned release date in November, we realize we need more time to perfect GT Sport, which we’ve already dedicated so much effort towards since announcing the title. We do not want to compromise the experience in any way. While we cannot confirm a new release date at this time, we are more committed than ever to making GT Sport the best Gran Turismo game to date.”
As the first mainline entry since Gran Turismo 6 three years ago, Sport will come packing a variety of new features beyond prettier graphics and VR support. Chief among them is the addition of competitive gaming, with Polyphony set to stage live competitive e-sports events on a regular basis. Further details are expected to be disclosed closer to release.
