Even if you only have a passing interest in astronomy, you’ll know that scientists across the globe have been enraptured in recent months thanks to strange and wholly abnormal spikes in radio waves across various constellations – not to mention talk of an alien megastructure (dyson sphere?) in some far-flung pocket of space.
Perhaps more than anything, these fleeting anomalies are a pointed reminder that the painstaking search for extraterrestrial life may bear fruit before too long, and it’s that corner of the zeitgeist that Denis Villeneuve will hope to tap into with the launch of Arrival later this year.
Placing Amy Adams in the boots of expert linguist Louise Banks, Villeneuve’s other hotly-anticipated sci-fi film – Blade Runner 2 being the second – is rooted in a world on the brink of collapse. Aliens have descended into our atmosphere, and it’s up to Adams and Co. to decipher their language and, ultimately, make first contact. But will these extraterrestrial visitors prove to be hostile?
One way or the other, all signs point to Villeneuve delivering a beautiful, thought-provoking genre piece in a few months’ time, which only has us all the more excited for Blade Runner 2‘s launch in 2017.
Also starring Jeremy Renner, Forest Whitaker and Michael Stuhlbarg, Arrival enters low Earth orbit (and theaters) on November 11. Expect Denis Villeneuve’s intriguing sci-fi flick to make its worldwide bow at Toronto International Film Festival.
