Bandai Namco announced today that they will be bringing the tactical RPG Chroma Squad to Xbox One, PlayStation 4, PlayStation Vita and mobile devices in 2017. The Kickstarter-funded title, which was developed by Behold Studios, was originally released for Windows PC in 2015.
Inspired by the world of Super Sentai, Chroma Squad has players take control of five stunt actors who have decided to create their own Power Rangers-like TV program. In order to generate high ratings, the team will need to face off against a variety of unique enemies. Players will hire new actors, purchase better equipment, craft powerful weapons and build giant mechs to achieve fame and fortune.
Besides its retro look, Chroma Squad is unique due to the mash-up of tactical RPG gameplay and TV production management. After assembling the right team and gear for production, players will do battle against foes in traditional RPG battles. As you work through the season, cast member skills can be improved and the team can even come together to learn how to properly utilize their abilities. Presumably, like the TV show it apes, each episode will end with a giant mech battle against an over-sized foe.
As someone who re-watched all of Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers a few years back (it does NOT hold up), I’ve been following Chroma Squad since it was first unveiled. Despite being perfect for gaming, the long-running series has never really made a good transition to gaming, outside of the first SNES release. It’s funny, though, that this could be coming out close to the release of the film reboot of the franchise. You would think Saban would want to have a licensed product out in time, but nothing has been revealed so far.
