Nicki Minaj took to SoundCloud to release a brand new song entitled “The Pinkprint Freestyle,” which keeps things current with a reference to the late Cincinnati Zoo gorilla, Harambe.
Meme references aside, Minaj does some fun things throughout “The Pinkprint Freestyle.” She manages to fit a whole bunch within its six minute runtime, like calling herself the female Jay-Z and even reciting a bit of M.I.A.’s “Paper Planes” chorus.
“The Pinkprint Freestyle” is the first new material we’ve heard from Minaj since her 2014 record, The Pinkprint, so does it live up to expectations? Well, the song is more rap focused than it is pop, and considering it’s called a freestyle, it’s doubtful that it’ll appear on any kind of album. However, Minaj does have a knack for releasing rap-centric songs before dropping a record – before Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded came out, Minaj debuted “Roman In Moscow,” and then prior to The Pinkprint, we heard “Lookin Ass” off the compilation, Young Money: Rise of an Empire. Though there’s no concrete evidence that there will be a new Minaj album this fall, the fact that she released a hype track is a good sign.
Nicki Minaj has been pretty busy in the music game despite not releasing much material lately. This year, the rapper was featured on tracks like DJ Khaled’s “Don’t Hurt Me,” Bebe Rexha’s “No Broken Hearts,” and Ariana Grande’s “Side To Side.” As such, we’re definitely excited to hear “The Pinkprint Freestyle” and look forward to whatever else it is that she has in store for us.
