Alfonso Cuarón is a unique filmmaker. He’s done everything from dystopian fantasy (Children of Men), coming-of-age story (Y Tu Mama Tambien), and even a Harry Potter film (Prisoner of Azkaban). Most recently, of course, he impressed with the nail-biting Gravity, for which he won an Oscar in 2014. But it’s now been three years since Gravity, and Cuarón has only just picked his next project.
Cuarón is working on an as-yet-untitled movie with Participant Media. He plans to write and direct the new film, which will be a family drama set in Mexico City during the 1970s. Cuarón says that the project is close to his heart, for he was born in Mexico City and raised there during the 1970s. There are no other plot details as yet, however, so it will be some time before we know if this film will touch on Cuarón’s biography in any way.
It’s been awhile since we saw the director behind the camera, so it’s nice to hear that he’s chosen a project and will start working again. It’s equally nice to hear that he’s moving away from the harder sci-fi projects of his past and back towards Y Tu Mama Tambien. That’s always been my favorite of Cuarón’s works, beyond any of his bigger budget films, and it will be intriguing to see what the director will do with a smaller movie, now that he’s got several blockbusters and an Oscar under his belt. While there’s little information as yet, I do hope that this film will be in the his native language and not tailored to English-speaking audiences.
Production will begin on the untitled project this fall, which means that we’re going to have a long time until Cuarón’s latest hits screens. Here’s hoping that the new film is worth the wait.
