The Broken Lizard comedy group consists of Jay Chandrasekhar, Kevin Heffernan, Steve Lemme, Paul Soter and Erik Stolhanske and, when they released their film Super Troopers in 2001, it was met with something of a luke-warm critical reception. That film has continued to build an audience in the intervening years, however, to the extent that Super Troopers 2 was been successfully crowdfunded on Indigogo. The group are now deep into production on the follow-up, and have cast Emmanuelle Chriqui in a new role.
The original film centred on five Vermont State Troopers who spent most of their time playing elaborate pranks on the Canadian border, until real crime disrupted their fun. Their intense rivalry with the local police of Spurbury took on a new complexion when the troopers uncover corruption in that department. The end of the film finds the Troopers replacing the local police, and moving into a different level of crime-fighting.
Super Troopers 2 was initially slated to be a prequel, but is now confirmed to be a sequel that picks up the plot just three months after the events of the first film. This time, it seems that the law enforcement officers will be facing eco-terrorism amidst their own rural locale. Emmanuelle Chriqui has been cast as Genevieve Aubois – a French/Canadian cultural attaché, working in U.S relations. Director Jay Chandrasekhar explained his excitement at having Chriqui on board.
“Emmanuelle and I met years ago and have been trying to work together ever since. With Super Troopers 2, we found the perfect part and our worlds finally aligned.”
Chriqui has previously starred in Murder In The First and Entourage, but hopefully Super Troopers 2 will provide her with a more substantial comedic role, once the film reaches cinemas.
