Captain America: Civil War and soon-to-be Black Panther star Chadwick Boseman has offered his two cents on the failings of Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, claiming that Zack Snyder’s mythic tentpole suffered from the ol’ ‘too many cooks’ conundrum.
Championed as the superhero battle of 2016, it was Joe and Anthony Russo’s Civil War that found better success with audiences and critics alike and was, quite frankly, the more compelling feature. When quizzed about this gulf in quality by RadioTimes (via CBM), Boseman spoke candidly regarding the shortcomings of Dawn of Justice, and why it’s so often the case that when “many people [are] deciding something,” in a production, there tends to be no “clear voice from the director.”
“Sometimes when you watch movies you see that the producers are saying something, someone else is saying something, the directors are saying something. And sometimes, it doesn’t work. I don’t know if that’s why it doesn’t resonate, if it’s because maybe the director didn’t get his cut, I have no way of knowing that.” Boseman added that at Marvel, “the directors are very much making the movie.”
Tonal inconsistencies and messy editing were just some of the criticisms levelled against Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice a few months back, and broadly speaking, Boseman’s comments are surely not too far from the truth. Circling back to the Marvel camp, however, the actor capped off the interview by dropping a tantalizing hint of Black Panther‘s tone.
“There’s a mystery and a mystique to [Black Panther]. So all those things to me sort of present a recipe for a darker drama than you might normally see.”
Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice descended into theaters earlier this year. Black Panther, meanwhile, has been earmarked for release on July 6, 2018.
