Following Jessica Jones, Marvel fast-tracked Luke Cage ahead of Iron Fist to foster the momentum of Mike Colter's Hero for Hire.

Krysten Ritter may have been the prime focus of Netflix’s rather excellent Jessica Jones last year – and rightfully so – but spread across a handful of episodes was the debut of Mike Colter as Luke Cage, Marvel’s hulking Hero for Hire.

A stoic screen presence that brought Archie Goodwin, John Romita, Sr. and George Tuska’s creation to life in remarkable fashion, Colter’s less-is-more performance won over fans from the off; in fact, such was the glowing reception to Luke Cage that Marvel even bumped Iron Fist into 2017 so that the Mike Colter-fronted spinoff could take precedence, building on the momentum of that aforementioned debut.

That’s quite the vote of confidence, and sure enough, Luke Cage showrunner Cheo Hodari Coker told Complex that, “Marvel went from, ‘We’re gonna take our time’ to ‘Let’s flip it and do Luke Cage first.’ ‘We’ve got this great concept and this guy is leaping off the screen, let’s follow the momentum.’”

Promising “big beats and bigger beat downs,” Coker’s superhero series is now only days away from its premiere on Netflix – see our review here to get up to speed on the goings-on in Harlem. If excitement among Marvel fans wasn’t already at a fever-pitch, yesterday’s final trailer – one which teed up the clash between Mike Colter’s Power Man and Cornell “Cottonmouth” Stokes in excellent fashion – really sent that anticipation into overdrive.

Last and certainly not least, up above you’ll be able to clock eyes on a music featurette for the imminent show touting Colter’s Street Level Hero. It’s an extended run of an older clip, but it’s still wonderfully intriguing nonetheless.

All 13 episodes of Marvel’s Luke Cage will make their bow on Netflix come Friday, September 30.
