Last we reported on the future of What We Do in the Shadows, director Taika Waititi revealed that all involved in the hit 2014 horror comedy were game for a sequel, however, it appears that future will now make room for a spinoff TV series.

Word comes by way of Radio New Zealand (via /Film), revealing that New Zealand On Air has pledged support to the offshoot to the tune of $1.4 million, mapping out plans for six 30-minute episodes. They’ll premiere Down Under via New Zealand channel, TVNZ 2, though there is currently no mention of when the series will air overseas. We’ll notify you if and when that changes. Known officially as Paranormal Event Response Unit, the Shadows spinoff is said to take place in Wellington, following the paranormal heroics of Mike and Karen as they protect people “from supernatural phenomena in their own police reality series.”

Circling back to those sequel plans, we know that it’ll arrive bearing the title We’re Wolves and will herald the return of Rhys Darby, Stuart Rutherford and the rest of the gang. Don’t expect it to enter active production for at least a couple of years, but Waititi already has plans cooking:

We want to do it, and we’re coming up with story ideas. The first film took us about seven years to make, and we don’t want to do that again. It’s a lot easier now that we have all the characters, and we know how we want to do it, and we know that we can do it. The first time we were doing it, we had no idea what we were trying to do, really. It’s not like we were inventing the mockumentary genre, but doing it with special effects, and trying to figure that all out, and make it funny, was a really, really long process.

We’ll be keeping track of Paranormal Event Response Unit as it nears premiere. As for Taika Waititi, following Hunt for the Wilderpeople, next on the director’s calling card is Marvel threequel Thor: Ragnarok, which may or may not have room in its ranks for a certain Sorcerer Supreme. Look for that one to bow on November 3, 2017.
