Naomi Alderman Novel Disobedience Bound For The Big Screen With Rachel McAdams And Rachel Weisz

Rachels McAdams and Weisz have agreed terms to join Disobedience, an adaptation of Naomi Alderman’s debut novel of the same name.

Confirmation of that two-fold casting hails from Variety and Screen International, revealing that it is Rachel Weisz who is also in line to produce the button-pressing drama following her stint on Radiator. Chilean filmmaker Sebastian Lelio is primed to make his English-language debut with the movie, working from a script he co-wrote alongside Rebecca Lenkiewicz.

For the uninitiated, Alderman’s book centers on Ronit, the estranged daughter of a rabbi who returns home from New York City to the Orthodox Jewish neighbourhood she grew up in London to attend her father’s funeral. It proves to be a testing trip across the pond, however, after her arrival causes upheaval among the relatively quiet community. Little is known about how Weisz and McAdams will fit into that provocative story – perhaps Weisz will take point as Ronit? As for the confirmed tidbits, though, Room producer Ed Guiney and Frida Torresblanco (Pan’s Labyrinth) are also attached to oversee the development of Disobedience.

It’s unclear as yet when Disobedience will hit theaters, but we understand London will play host to the film’s production during the upcoming winter months. For now, moviegoers can look forward to Rachel McAdams making a rare foray into the blockbuster space with the release of Marvel’s Doctor Strange on November 4. Weisz, meanwhile, has lined up a potentially awards-friendly turn opposite Michael Fassbender and Alicia Vikander in The Light Between Oceans. It’ll also hit on November 4 for those in the UK following a Stateside release back in September.
