Court of the Dead: Underworld Rising is one such example of Sony’s continued commitment to giving indie developers their own space to flourish. The turn-based, retro-inspired RPG is headed for PS4 at some point in the future, and sees players fight for the afterlife by way of a Gothic 2D world to explore and conquer.

Taking place in a suitably grim rendition of the underworld, Sideshow’s RPG asks you to join one of three factions vying for control of the realm in order to gather followers and become a legend of a literal life after death. Once you’re done aligning yourself with either the Flesh, Spirit or Bone factions, you’ll be given total freedom to customize your character however you see fit. Sideshow’s promising unparalleled options on that front, with body modifications, weapons and armor being just some of the options available to you.

Tactical, turn-based combat is a major component of Underworld Rising‘s gameplay, but so too, is world exploration. Sideshow says that every action you take can have repercussions down the road, including having bounties placed on your head if you decide to steal from various vendors.

A demo for Court of the Dead: Underworld Rising will be available to try at the New York Comic Con, which runs from tomorrow until October 9.
