Travis Scott fans got a fun surprise this morning when it was noticed that a seemingly brand new album from the artist had surfaced onto streaming sites — turns out, though, that’s not actually the case.
A rep from Scott’s team confirmed soon after that the record is a fake and that efforts were being made to get the collection taken down. Of course, “fake” simply means “unauthorized,” not necessarily that the songs aren’t by him.
The album, titled Days Before Birds, is a ten track “album” filled with songs that predate his latest record, Birds In The Trap Sing McKnight. A mixture of leaks and premieres solely from Scott’s .wav Radio Beats 1 show, Days Before Birds was constructed in a way that could probably fool most, but it wasn’t getting past seasoned Scott veterans. To top it off, it looks like the uploader at least made an attempt to create a halfway decent cover art, adding to its intended legitimacy.
It is interesting, though, that completely fake and non-sanctioned albums can somehow make their way to major streaming services like Spotify and Apple Music under a big artist’s name. What’s even more surprising is the fact that there are plenty of albums just like Days Before Birds on Apple Music – take Future, for example, who has had tons of unauthorized collections as “albums” up for stream for quite a while now, and it doesn’t seem like they’ll be taken down any soon.
Either way, no new Travis Scott album for today, so we’ll just have to keep spinning the real Birds instead.
