Upon taking the reins on Warner’s solo Aquaman movie, horror maestro James Wan had but one goal in mind: to alter public perception so that Arthur Curry is no longer ridiculed as a joke among the superhero world.

A dramatic overhaul for the King of the Seven was needed, then, and although we’ve yet to clock eyes on any footage from Wan’s solo effort, thanks to that enticing Justice League sizzle reel, Jason Momoa has all but silenced critics claiming that the former Game of Thrones actor wasn’t suited to the lush underwater world of Atlantis. We’ll see both Momoa and Amber Heard (Mera) in action late next year thanks to Zack Snyder’s ensemble piece, and while chatting to Entertainment Tonight, Wan teased that fans will get a very small taste of Aquaman through Justice League in 2017.

Per ET: “I think Amber and Jason Momoa, in their moments in Justice League, [are] going to give the rest of the world a flavor of what their own standalone movie could be. And that is just scratching the surface of what I plan to do.”

It’s no secret that the DC Extended Universe has come under fire early on due to Batman V Superman and later Suicide Squad, but despite a rocky start, there’s still plenty to look forward to. A solo Aquaman movie is certainly one of them, and when asked about the general tone underpinning the standalone pic, Wan likened it to a “classic sort of swashbuckling adventure.”

“I kind of don’t want to give too much away but know this: The spirit that I’m going for is like a classic sort of swashbuckling action adventure, sort of high seas adventure story,” Wan said. “It’s ultimately a quest story in the spirit of Raiders of the Lost Ark meets Romancing the Stone.”

Following in the footsteps of Justice League, Aquaman will unleash Jason Momoa’s King of the Seven in earnest when Wan’s solo effort bows on July 27, 2018.
