Looks like someone woke up on the wrong side of the bed this morning – Hugh Jackman’s battle-scarred Wolverine solemnly gazes into a grubby mirror in the latest pic for James Mangold’s Logan. Weapon X has never looked so groggy.

Keeping up tradition, this still, one which hails from Mangold’s lively Twitter feed, is rendered in black and white, and considering the sheer amount of monotone photos that exist for Fox’s 2017 sequel, it wasn’t all that surprising to see rumors swirling that the studio was planning to release a black-and-white cut of the finished product. That may well be the case, but until we learn more, you can feast your eyes on an alternative version of that Logan teaser.

Circling back to this latest image, Mangold’s only caption touts the technical specs of the camera on which the photo was taken. Nevertheless, it’s a moody, raw portrait of an aging mutant that is fast losing the will to live.

Set in the not-do-distant future, Logan imagines a grim reality in which the mutant population is on the wane, allowing the nefarious Essex Corp to round up the remaining survivors and subject them to nightmarish tests. Anchoring that story is the dynamic between Jackman’s lead and X-23, the young clone played here by relative newcomer Dafne Keen.

“Nature made me a freak. Man made me a weapon. And God made it last too long.” Logan will close the book on Hugh Jackman’s tenure as Wolverine on March 3, 2017, when the Aussie actor will be joined by Dafne Keen as X-23, Boyd Holbrook, Richard E. Grant, Stephen Merchant, Patrick Stewart and Eriq La Salle.
