Justice League Dark Director Promises An “Unconventional” Adaptation

Fans wondered if Warner Bros.’ big-screen take on DC’s team of magical super-antiheroes, Justice League Dark, would even get off the ground after original director Guillermo del Toro exited the project, but a couple of months ago it was announced that Edge of Tomorrow‘s Doug Liman had signed on to helm the picture.

Details on the story are practically non-existent at the moment, but in a new interview with IGN Liman explained why the studio went to him, and outlined his approach to the material:

“Yeah, I mean first of all, I love those characters, and I love Warner Bros., and I love [producer] Scott Rudin, and it’s — and you know, I get asked to come in and do things that are “unconventional.” If people want conventional, they don’t come to me. It’s why doing Invisible was like right up my alley — because how can you be conventional when there aren’t even conventions that exist? And so you know when Warner Bros. wants to sort of turn the comic book genre on its head, they call me.”

A Justice League Dark (which is currently dubbed “Dark Universe”) movie certainly has the potential to re-invent the genre – but then again, we all thought the same might be true of Suicide Squad. If Liman is able to accurately portray and balance characters such as Swamp Thing, Deadman, Zattanna and John Constantine though while also injecting some of the mystical/horror elements from the comic, he may just succeed.

Justice League Dark doesn’t have a release date set at present, but we’ll be sure to keep you updated on that and all other developments relating to the movie.
