Though he started off his career on an extremely promising note thanks to Chronicle, director Josh Trank has had a rough couple of years following the disaster that was Fantastic Four. It’s hard for a filmmaker to bounce back from something like that, but Trank seems to determined to do so, as he’s now signed on to helm Fonzo.

What makes this project particularly exciting is who he’s drafted in as his lead man: Tom Hardy. Arguably one of the most talented actors working today, Hardy has been brought on board to play Al Capone, which seems like the perfect role for him given how excellent he was in Legend, where he played twin brothers who were gangsters.

Fonzo is being produced by Russell Ackerman and John Schoenfelder of Addictive Pictures and Lawrence Bender, and centers on “Capone in the final days of his life.” So, not a straight up biopic then, but certainly something that could turn out to be quite interesting.

For those who don’t know, Capone suffered from paresis after being released from prison. During the last year of his life, he also had the mentality of a 12-year-old and eventually had a stroke, which led to a fatal cardiac arrest shortly after.

Just which part of his final days Fonzo will focus on is unclear, but it doesn’t seem like this will be a true gangster/crime flick. Still, that doesn’t make it any less exciting and seeing Hardy sign on here definitely gives us confidence in the project.
