You can’t talk about the best of Bruno Mars without giving love to his ballads and laid-back numbers, too. From cuts like “Grenade” and “Just The Way You Are,” to more emotional ones like “When I Was Your Man” and “Moonshine,” Mars has shown that he’s the master of any type of mood, but it’s his songs off his new album, 24k Magic, that seem to take it to the next level.
After coming in strong with the lead single and title track to his upcoming record, Mars gets a bit more sensual on the new song, “Versace on the Floor.” Giving “When I Was Your Man” a run for its money, “Versace” is one of the most versatile slow jams in his catalog, and it manages to pay homage to the 80’s and early 90’s while still keeping things current and radio ready.
Mars spoke about the track in his recent cover story with Rolling Stone, saying that he remixed the song multiple times in order to make it into the “big ballad” of the record as opposed to “poolside music” that it originally sounded like. Judging from the final version here, it seems like he nailed the vibe he was looking for and ended up turning a “poolside” song into a bedside banger, instead.
Bruno Mars’ 24k Magic is only a few weeks away, and while it’s sure to include a bunch of tunes in vein of the lead single, it’s stuff like “Versace on the Floor” that really keeps everyone coming back for more.
