J.K. Simmons Leads A Team Of Renegades In First Trailer For Upcoming Heist Caper

J.K. Simmons spearheads a team of Renegades in the explosive first trailer for Steven Quale's upcoming heist thriller.

Five Navy SEALs, $300 million in lost gold, one incredible mission – what could possibly go wrong? Quite a lot, as the explosive first trailer for crime caper Renegades attests.

Placing the Oscar-winning J.K. Simmons in the role of a no-nonsense army chief – seen here barking orders in a manner that evokes memories of WhiplashRenegades takes place in 1995 Sarajevo, where a crack team of SEALs fly off the radar in a bid to recover a stash of lost Nazi gold from the icy depths of the Bosnian lake. Complicating matters is the fact that they’re deep within enemy territory, setting the stage for nail-biting chase sequences, firefights, and plenty of explosive set-pieces.

Hatched by Taken‘s Luc Besson and Richard Wenk, EuropaCorp is the studio behind the action-thriller, and even from the reveal trailer alone, it’s clear that Besson and co. are looking to tap into a similar over-the-top action glimpsed across the Taken franchise and even the Denzel Washington-fronted actioner, The Equalizer. Recruiting J.K. Simmons is certainly a good place to start, and here we see the actor flanked by a cast comprised of Sullivan Stapleton, Charlie Bewley, Diarmaid Murtagh, Alain Blazevic, Sylvia Hoeks, Joshua Henry, Dimitri Leonidas, Denis Lyons.

Directed by Steven Quale, Renegades storms theaters on February 3, 2017. It was initially expected to bow in July of this year, but EuropaCorp opted to push the military thriller into next year, likely in an attempt to shield it from the crowded blockbuster season.
