Listen To Alessia Cara Take On Frank Ocean’s “Super Rich Kids”

Covers are sometimes done best when the one taking on the track has a special admiration for the original artist -- it goes deeper than just simply liking their music. When there’s that unique connection, the cover can turn out much better than originally imagined. For Alessia Cara, the music of Frank Ocean means a lot to her, and it’s shown off brilliantly in her new cover of his track, “Super Rich Kids.”

Stopping by Annie Mac’s BBC Radio 1 show, Cara performed a couple of her own tracks before dishing out a version of Ocean’s “Super Rich Kids.” She prefaced it with calling it one of the “most brilliant songs ever,” hoping that she could “do it justice.” As it turns out, she’s got no problem doing it justice and then some, as her rendition turns the R&B song into something a little more jazzier, and she even does Earl Sweatshirt’s verse, too. You can hear it at the 22:09 mark.

Frank Ocean covers are hardly a new thing for Cara, as she’s been known for giving us unique takes on “Swim Good” and his Blonde track, “Ivy” in the past, but what she accomplishes in “Super Rich Kids” puts it at the forefront of the best covers we’ve heard from her yet. More from Alessia Cara will surely be coming in the future, and hopefully they’ll be just as good.
