Suicide Squad was disappointing on quite a few levels, but for fans of The Joker, the thing that stung the most was the lack of Jared Leto’s Clown Prince of Crime. The infamous Batman villain was a large part of the marketing, and there were even several shots in the trailers that never found their way into the theatrical release. Perhaps to go some way towards remedying this, Warner Bros. will release an extended cut of the film next month, and there will definitely be more Mr. J in it.
Today, Collider has debuted a new featurette from the Blu-ray which gives us an insight into Leto’s approach to the role, and provides a look at some previously unseen footage. The Academy Award-winning actor was notorious for going full method and completely immersing himself in character over the course of the shoot, and we get a glimpse of that here as Leto improvises some dialogue during the Harley Quinn “conversion” scene.
There are also interview snippets with Leto and director David Ayer, and here’s a transcript of the former talking about taking on such an iconic role:
“This role has always been interpreted so beautifully, but then there’s the other side: What else can you uncover? What other parts of this story or this life, what can you do that hasn’t been done? That side of me that likes exploration, that likes adventure, that likes to push the envelope, that was set on fire immediately. I knew that I was going to have to dive really deep and go to a place that I’ve never gone before.”
Suicide Squad is set to be released on Digital HD on November 15, before making its way to Blu-Ray and DVD on December 13.
