Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs surprised everyone in 2009 when it ended up being a heartfelt and truly funny comedy. A sequel was announced shortly after the success of film and 24 Frames is now reporting that it will not use the story from the sequel of the book that Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs was based on. Instead, it will contain an entirely new and original story from Horrible Bosses writers John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein.

Based on the classic children’s novel by Judi Barrett, the film centered on Flint Lockwood (Bill Hader), a young scientist who invents a machine that can turn water molecules into food. When the machine goes awry and shoots into space, the town starts receiving all types of food from the sky, courtesy of Flint’s invention.

The film is very loosely based on the book, which is actually about an older gentleman who is forced to leave his magical town where the clouds rain food. In the book’s sequel, Pickles to Pittsburgh, he returns to his home and is able to collect food for other cities in need.

Any connection between the Pickles to Pittsburgh story and the story that will be in the Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs sequel would be a serious stretch. Perhaps going down the original story route is the best choice.

What do you think? Is creating an original story for the Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs sequel a good idea?
