Though many scoffed at the initial pitch for Better Call Saul – how do you carve out a new story after setting the bar so high with Breaking Bad? – it didn’t take long for AMC’s spinoff to find its feet, as it’s now quietly gearing up for its third season on the airwaves.

In typical Vince Gilligan fashion, the prequel series has a tendency to jump around and explore two timelines: the first is, of course, the gripping origin story behind crafty lawyer Jimmy McGill; meanwhile, the second looks forward to the future, beyond even Breaking Bad, to offer a peek at the depressing life of Gene. Thanks to this first look at Better Call Saul season 3 (via EW), we now know that’s a trend that will continue in 2017, with two of the three photos above teasing what’s in store for Bob Odenkirk’s washed-up Gene long after his encounter with Heisenberg.

Elsewhere, the third and final image puts Chuck (Michael McKean) and Jimmy housed up in the former’s crummy abode, which remains covered in tin foil to protect Chuck from harmful radiation. Given the events that transpired during the season 2 finale, it’s difficult to nail down the context of said pic, but we imagine both brothers have some wounds to heal before the third season gets going in earnest.

Expect Better Call Saul season 3 to premiere via AMC in spring 2017. Tell us, are you excited for the return of Slippin’ Jimmy? Don’t forget that Bryan Cranston remains open to reprising the iconic role of Walter White for a potential cameo, while Aaron Paul (Jesse Pinkman) is still perched on the fence.
