We’ve known that The Fault in Our Stars director Josh Boone had been tapped to helm 2oth Century Fox’s New Mutants adaptation for a while now, but a few intriguing casting rumors and the potential team lineup aside, we haven’t had any official word on the project since. However, Coming Soon has just dropped a few major plot details that are sure to make fans of the original team of junior X-Men very happy indeed.
The site has shared an official storyboard animatic, which depicts Colossus’ little sister Illyana Rasputin/Magik and Lockheed the dragon rushing into battle with a giant bear. This confirms that Boone’s film will indeed adapt elements of one of the most popular comic arcs, “The Demon Bear Saga.”
[zergpaid]In the comics, the bear is a powerful demonic entity that’s linked to Danielle Moonstar/Mirage’s Cheyenne history, and emerges from her psyche to torment her young teammates. We can probably expect a few liberties to be taken with the source material of course, but that’s the general gist of it.
This is not your average superhero story, and sure enough, Boone’s film is being touted as a “Stephen King meets John Hughes”-style horror movie. The site also reveals that Nat Wolff (Paper Towns, The Fault in Our Stars) is being eyed for the role of Sam Guthrie/Cannonball.
