Imagine Dragons are currently in the studio working on their third full-length – the follow-up to last year’s Smoke + Mirrors. While not as praised as their debut, it was still good enough to warrant excitement for what was going to follow. And though the next installment of their career won’t arrive until sometime next year, in the meantime, the band has released something to hold everybody over.
Made for the upcoming movie, Passengers, Imagine Dragons debuted their brand new song, “Levitate,” today. The track acts as the theme for the romantic sci-fi flick, and strangely enough, it’s kind of got the sound that you would expect it to. Taking a more contemporary pop route, “Levitate” has a vibe that’s more akin to their songs like “Demons” or “On Top of the World” rather than something rockier like “Radioactive.” Still, it’s super catchy, and probably a better song than most off their last record.
Even though the tune was written specifically for the film, it wouldn’t be a surprise if some of the material from the new album has a sound similar to this. Imagine Dragons are known for their arena-ready rock jams, but it’s always a treat when they decide to churn out something a bit poppier. Could an entire album work out successfully in that vein? We’ll have to wait and see how things turn out next year.
