When Iron Man was released way back in 2008, the concept of a shared movie universe was pretty much unheard of. When he, alongside a number of other heroes who had starred in their own solo movies, were then brought together for The Avengers, the minds of fans everywhere were blown.
Of course, seeing Earth’s Mightiest Heroes standing alongside each other is now nothing special, but by the time Avengers: Infinity War rolls around, we’ll get to see them meet Star-Lord and company. That should be pretty exciting for fans, but first up for that team of “A-Holes” is Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.
We already know that the movie looks downright incredible, but where exactly does it fit into the wider Marvel Cinematic Universe? During a recent Q&A on Twitter, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 director James Gunn made it clear that the Phase 3 release’s unique setting ensures that it’s free of any major ties.
“I’m so out in space unconnected at this point, outside of Thanos in Vol 1. I’ve never had to deal with even a single moment of continuity.”
That’s no bad thing, as it means that the Guardians’ arrival on Earth can happen without too much disruption being caused to the franchise. It also frees Gunn from having to waste too much time in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 setting up the events of Avengers: Infinity War beyond perhaps the odd mention of what Thanos has been up to.
We’ll just have to wait and see how this all pans out, but we can at least be glad that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 won’t be two hours of MCU building exposition.
