When you have Christian Bale and Oscar Isaac in your movie, it’s not going to sit idly for long. Following its world premiere at TIFF earlier this fall, The Promise has now secured its distributor and release date, with Open Road Films scheduling an April 28, 2017 release for the period drama.

Also starring Charlotte Le Bon, Shohreh Aghdashloo, Angela Sarafyan, Jean Reno, James Cromwell, Daniel Giminez Cacho and more, The Promise is the latest film from Oscar-winning Hotel Rwanda director Terry George. Described as an “epic love story set against a turning point in world history,” according to Open Road’s Tom Ortenberg, it’ll follow the Armenian genocide much like George’s previous film explored the Rwandan genocide.

Unfortunately, it earned less-than-stellar reviews upon its TIFF premiere, with critics calling it “an epic bore,” “generic,” “cluttered,” “obvious” and “out of date.” Our own Joseph Falcone went as far as to call it “stagnant, contrived and oh so boring” in his 1.5 star review. Perhaps that explains why it took a few months before a distributor signed the bill. That said, kinder reviews celebrated its “traditional,” “old-fashioned” storytelling, while also complimenting its “good intentions” and performances from its talented cast. Hopefully, audiences will be easier once it hits theaters.

Tell us, are you looking forward to The Promise, or have the negative reviews turned you off from it? Sound off down below and let us know.
