Few directors in the business garner the level of excitement and buzz that Christopher Nolan does. This is, after all, the creative mind behind such event movies as Inception, Interstellar and of course, The Dark Knight trilogy, and Nolan’s commitment to practical effects and film – not to mention his long-time affinity for IMAX – has ensured that, throughout the years, his name has ostensibly become synonymous with jaw-dropping spectacle.
His next feature, Dunkirk, will look to uphold that lucrative trend come July. It’s pitched as a WWII action-thriller, one designed to chronicle the remarkable tale of Operation Dynamo when, in 1940, British forces managed to save some 330,000 Allied troops from the clutches of death in Northern France. A daring rescue mission by any standard, Operation Dynamo is often cited as one of the most defining events of World War II, and gave the Allies a much-needed lifeline against invading Nazi forces.
This, coupled with the fact that Dunkirk heralds Christopher Nolan’s first historical picture, ensures the director’s latest is already one of the most-anticipated films going into the New Year. Eager to fan the flames of excitement, we understand that Warner Bros. is poised to release a seven-minute IMAX preview of Dunkirk alongside Rogue One: A Star Wars Story later this week, while Trailer Track is reporting that a second trailer is due online Thursday, December 15.
It’s shaping up to be a big, big week for Nolan and Co., then, and considering the filmmaker reunited with Interstellar DP Hoyte van Hoytema – shooting across both IMAX 65mm film and 65mm large-format photography – that new footage will be nothing if not beautiful. Among those on board for the wartime epic are frequent Nolan collaborators Tom Hardy and Cillian Murphy, along with newcomer Fionn Whitehead, Kenneth Branagh, Aneurin Barnard, James D’Arcy, Jack Lowden, Barry Keoghan, Tom Glynn-Carney and Harry Styles.
Dunkirk is expected to deploy on July 21, 2017.
