First introduced via Sledgehammer’s Advanced Warfare two years ago, supply drops have now been added to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered alongside the shooter’s latest patch, update 1.06.
They’re a form of microtransaction, essentially, allowing players to purchase a random helping of cosmetic items – weapon camos, new reticles, various character skins and the like – using Call of Duty Points or Depot Credits, which in turn can be bought using real money or earned in-game by completing a series of challenges. MW Remastered‘s December update also heralds the addition of Parts, a crafting system similar to that found in Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare.
Finally, update 1.06 comes packing a new loot drop known as Operation Arctic Wolf. In it, you’ll find scores of combat uniforms, emblems, calling cards and brand-new characters, along with female fighters – a first for Modern Warfare. Speaking of which, Activision and developer Raven Software went on to discuss the thinking behind supply drops, which they believe allow “for a level of personalization that wasn’t possible in the original release in 2007.”
“Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered is a game we want players to be engaged in for a long time. We’re excited to support this great game with new content, beginning today with a ton of new customisation items that allow for a level of personalization that wasn’t possible in the original release in 2007.
“Personalisation is a big part of Call of Duty and something we’ve done in the series for a while now that fans really enjoy. But of course, we’ve done it very carefully as our highest priority is to retain the balance, aesthetics and player silhouettes in the game.”
The December update for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered is now live across all platforms, and is the same patch that completes the shooter’s roster of maps by adding Winter Crash, Bloc, Countdown, Pipeline, Showdown, Strike and Wet Work.
