Rogue One: A Star Wars Story Nears $300 Million At Worldwide Box Office

If one thing is for certain, it's that any film set in "a galaxy far, far way" is going to rake in some serious loot. Keeping with tradition, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is already dominating the worldwide box office and we wouldn't expect otherwise.

Not surprisingly, the spinoff film trounced the competition in the United States, debuting with a respectable $155 million. What’s also impressive is that it can boast the fourth largest international opening of all-time for the month of December with $135.5 million, placing it behind juggernauts such as Star Wars: The Force Awakens ($281 million), Avatar ($164.5 million) and The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey ($138 million).

Now, if we do the math, that amounts to $290.5 million worldwide, which no doubt has Disney executives dancing in the streets (especially since it beat initial estimates). Despite falling a bit short of what The Force Awakens accrued a year ago at this time, that’s still a pretty handsome return. After all, the studio always knew it wasn’t going to make quite as much as J.J. Abrams’ film.

With extremely positive word of the mouth and the holidays right around the corner now, we expect the prequel to continue performing strongly as the weeks go on. It deserves to, as well, as despite all the concerns that fans had beforehand, Rogue One turned out to be a thrilling new adventure for the franchise that brought something very refreshing to the table. It was far from perfect, but thanks to some strong performances and a stellar third act, not to mention a welcome stylistic departure, audiences seem to be thoroughly pleased with the film as a whole.

Should Rogue One: A Star Wars Story shatter any further box office records, we’ll be sure to keep you posted. In the meantime, tell us, are you happy with how the spinoff turned out? Sound off down below with your thoughts!
