Out of all the video game properities that have been retooled for the silver screen throughout the years, Assassin’s Creed is arguably one of the few to harbor an innate sense of franchise potential – thanks in large part to the series’ ability to hop between different epochs on a whim.

It’s a quality that both Justin Kurzel and Michael Fassbender have drawn attention to in the past, when both expressed a burning desire to engineer a full-blown film series based on Ubisoft’s clandestine juggernaut. Those ambitious plans look to have taken quite the hit following the movie’s release, and with Assassin’s Creed facing the tall order of confronting Rogue One, Sing and Passengers, it’s difficult to imagine Kurzel’s live-action tentpole making much of a dent at the weekend box office.

Conjecture aside, Michael Fassbender remains hopeful that he’ll get the chance to reprise the dual role of Callum Lynch/Aguilar further down the line, after revealing to Cinema Blend that 20th Century Fox has mapped out tentative plans for a “three-film arc.”

“This is the sort of origin of his story. We have an idea of where he’s going to go over the next two films. We kind of did a three-film arc. We’ll wait and see how people respond to this, but for sure, we have an idea of where he’s going to go next.”

Truth be told, the actor doesn’t seem all that convinced that Assassin’s Creed will warrant a sequel, and Duncan Jones’ Warcraft stands as a recent example of a budding franchise-starter that, sadly, proved to be little more than a flash in the pan.

Assassin’s Creed slinks into theatres today, December 21. In light of the critical consensus, do you plan on journeying out to see Justin Kurzel’s historical epic on the big screen? Do let us know.
