Michael Fassbender Will Play Lucifer (Sort Of) In Terrence Malick’s Weightless

This year was a particularly weak one, professionally speaking, for Michael Fassbender. While I'll defend X-Men: Apocalypse more than most, it certainly didn't live up to expectations. The same could more or less be said for The Light Between Oceans as well, and let's not even delve into Assassin's Creed. That wound is still healing, if it even made an impact at all.

This year was a particularly weak one, professionally speaking, for Michael Fassbender. While I’ll defend X-Men: Apocalypse more than most, it certainly didn’t live up to expectations. The same could more or less be said for The Light Between Oceans as well, and let’s not even delve into Assassin’s Creed. That wound is still healing, if it even made an impact at all.

Thankfully, next year’s Trespass Against Us (which is getting a limited run in January) is a little better, if still not quite exceptional, and we also have the promising Alien: Covenant on the horizon for the actor. But there’s another film to look forward to for Mr. Fassbender as well in 2017, as we’ll be seeing Terrance Malick’s Weightless, and based on the actor’s recent comments, we might be getting one of the most rightfully-interesting Fassbender projects in some time.

In a recent profile with The Times (via The Playlist and IndieWire), Fassbender revealed some interesting nuggets about the otherwise unknown new Malick joint. During the interview, the actor/producer talked about how he’ll play a “Lucifer”-like figure, and that he’ll share some scenes with Iggy Pop and John Lydon, a.k.a. Johnny Rotten, former lead singer of The Sex Pistols and current lead singer of Public Image Ltd. Knowing Malick, however, it’s unclear if this footage will even make it into the final cut of the film.

Starring Ryan Gosling, Christian Bale, Cate Blanchett, Rooney Mara, Natalie Portman, Haley Bennett, Val Kilmer, Benicio Del Toro, Holly Hunter, Clifton Collins Jr. and many more, Weightless is scheduled to hit theaters on March 17th, 2017 under Broad Green Pictures. Though Malick is known for his extended post-production schedules, by all accounts, it should be finished and ready to go on time. At least, we hope, as it certainly does sound intriguing.
