The Chainsmokers Pass Swedish House Mafia With New Record

To say that The Chainsmokers have enjoyed a landmark year in 2016 would be an understatement. Their single "Closer" with Halsey was undeniably one of the biggest songs of the year, dominating the charts with a record twelve weeks at the top of the Hot 100, while the song's lyric video and official music video have collectively generated more than a billion views. While "Closer" has finally been knocked down to the number three spot, the song has just cracked another record.

To say that The Chainsmokers have enjoyed a landmark year in 2016 would be an understatement. Their single “Closer” with Halsey was undeniably one of the biggest songs of the past 12 months, dominating the charts with a record twelve weeks at the top of the Hot 100, while the song’s lyric video and official music video have collectively generated more than a billion views. While “Closer” has finally been knocked down to the number three spot, the song has just cracked another record.

“Closer” has officially outperformed Swedish House Mafia‘s classic “Don’t You Worry Child.” The Chainsmokers’ biggest hit to date has spent seventeen weeks in the number one spot on Billboard’s Dance Mix/Show Airplay chart, beating out SHM’s sixteen week run with the aforementioned single. Quite impressive, eh?

The Chainsmokers have also held down the Dance/Electronic chart with “Closer” for seventeen weeks, though it will have to remain there for another ten weeks if the duo hope to dethrone Avicii‘s “Wake Me Up,” which dominated for a whopping 26 weeks. Only time will tell if they’ll surpass that record as well, but considering The Chainsmokers‘ massive year, it really wouldn’t surprise us if it did.
