The last thing we saw from New Mutants was a superb animatic featuring the team heading into action against the iconic Demon Bear, but thanks to a recent interview, we now know one more intriguing detail about the upcoming spinoff.

While doing the press rounds for Split, Anya Taylor-Joy weighed in on her role in the movie (while it hasn’t been made official just yet, the signs are all pointing to The Witch star playing Magik). After reiterating that nothing’s official as of right now, the actress spilled the beans on the fact that James McAvoy will appear as Charles Xavier.

“I’m a big fan so I’d love to be a part of it. I can’t say very much, but I would love to be a part of it. I think this year’s gonna be very exciting. I mean, I think James is already a part of it, isn’t he?”

While we have no idea when exactly New Mutants is set and how this team of younger heroes is brought together to act separately from the X-Men, Professor X showing up does make a lot of sense. Even if we’re just talking about a cameo appearance, it would help tie the two franchises together without Fox doing anything too heavy-handed.

There have also been rumblings that Storm might be part of the team, but director Josh Boone has indicated that he’ll be sticking closely to the source material by having the roster consist of the classic line-up from the comic books – which is fine by us.

A release date has yet to be revealed, but New Mutants will likely begin shooting this year for a 2018 debut.
