Acting as further proof that James Mangold’s upcoming R-rated threequel isn’t your typical superhero movie, organizers of the 2017 Berlin International Film Festival have confirmed that Logan will stage its world premiere at next month’s event. Set to take place through the week of February 9, Mangold’s actioner will be joined on the slate by T2: Trainspotting, the Danny Boyle-directed sequel that reunites Mark Renton and the gang after almost 20 years. Both pictures will screen out of competition.

For Logan, it’s a remarkable vote of confidence from 20th Century Fox, as the annual Berlin Film Festival is typically reserved for more arthouse fare – films from reputable directors Hong Sangsoo and Volker Schlondorff are among this year’s lineup. Ditto for T2: Trainspotting, and considering that Sony has been relatively quiet about Danny Boyle’s sequel hitherto – barring a trailer here or there – a world premiere at Berlin will serve as an exciting primer ahead of the film’s theatrical release on January 27. That date applies to the UK, with T2: Trainspotting expected to make its way across the pond in time for March 3, a date it shares with Logan incidentally.

Director James Mangold took to Twitter earlier today to welcome the news, revealing that both he and the creative team have now entered the final stretch. That’s exciting, too, considering the third and seemingly final Logan trailer is set to premiere sometime next week.

The 67th Berlin Film Festival will take place on February 9 and continue through until Sunday, February 19. Meanwhile, Logan hits US theaters on March 3 and will in all likelihood herald Hugh Jackman’s final screen appearance as Wolverine.
