Creepy strangers, psychotic kids, nightmarish birthday parties and four killer female directors – it can only be the all-female horror anthology film XX.
Comprised of four nerve-shredding short films – Roxanne Benjamin’s Don’t Fall, Jovanka Vuckovic’s The Box, Karyn Kusama’s Only Living Son and Birthday Party from Annie Clark (AKA musician St. Vincent) who is poised to make her directorial debut – Magnolia’s XX is not only a love letter to the genre itself, but to the talented women working within the horror field. That pool of enviable talent stretches to the other side of the lens as well, where the likes of Natalie Brown, Melanie Lynskey, Breeda Wool and Christina Kirk will be tackling all manner of nightmare fuel on the big screen.
Sofia Carrillo, the award-winning animator and creative mind behind La Casa Triste, is also involved in this most special project, one which “wraps together four suspenseful stories of terror.” The trailer above doesn’t skimp on the scare factor, and each segment of XX looks to be as unnerving and horrifying as the last. We’re now little under a month away from the film’s limited theatrical release, so here’s hoping that Magnolia’s collection of spine-chilling vignettes can do good on their potential.
Magnolia plans to release XX across select theaters and digital platforms – namely Amazon Video and iTunes – on February 17. An appearance at the upcoming Sundance Film Festival is also on the cards, where the all-female anthology will stage its hotly-anticipated world premiere via the event’s Midnight section. Sundance 2017 begins in earnest next week, January 19.
