Rocket League developer Psyonix will undoubtedly be breaking open the champagne right about now. As of January 2017, the vehicular extreme sports title has seen over 25 million players shepherd an oversized ball around its turf pitches, with over 1 billion matches having been recorded and completed since its launch back in 2015.

The above image provides a simple breakdown of which game modes have proved to be most popular with Rocket League‘s player base, with Competitive the clear runaway winner, accounting for 50% of all matches played. Casual comes in second with a 33% share, with Alternative and Private matches making up the remaining 17%.

2016 has proved to be a monumental one for Psyonix. Several large updates, including the Basketball and Rumble modes – the latter of which takes a page out of Mario Kart‘s book by scattering bonkers power-ups around the map – have been introduced as free updates alongside paid-for content packs that bolster the available suite of vehicles.

Perhaps most noteworthy of all, though, is the revelation by Sony earlier this month that Rocket League was the most downloaded title on the PlayStation Store throughout 2016, beating out the likes of Battlefield 1 and Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare to clinch the top spot. So, what’s next? Psyonix hasn’t announced its plans for 2017 just yet, but we imagine fans can expect more new modes, cars and customization options to make their way in-game over the next 11 months.

If you’ve yet to bow to the pressure and give Rocket League a test drive, it’s available now on Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC. Be warned: it’s terribly addictive.
