Day by day, fans are beginning to get a better understanding of Ryan Coogler’s Black Panther solo movie. Of course, as the standalone pic makes its formative steps into production, much of the attention has been trained on the casting process – and rightly so, given the caliber of talent Marvel has been able to attract – but a new report from East Bay Times suggests that Coogler’s spinoff will harken back to T’Challa’s time in American education.

Citing a source within the California-based AC Transit public transportation agency, which has seemingly given Marvel Studios permission to use its old-school logo, EBT claims that Black Panther will feature a flashback scene to 1990s America where Chadwick Boseman’s would-be king is attending Saint Mary’s College High School. All of this is yet to be confirmed, but given Coogler’s feature film is currently lensing in parts of Atlanta, Georgia, it certainly makes a lot of sense. Furthermore, and assuming this rumor is on point, it hints that the Black Panther solo film will take a deep dive into the character of T’Challa, tossing up a few surprises in the process.

“They’ve learned that Marvel Studios asked for permission to use an AC Transit bus logo from the ’90s for their upcoming movie. In one scene, the film’s protagonist has a flashback to 1990, while he was a student at Saint Mary’s College High School in Berkeley. And of course, he’s a daily AC Transit commuter. Cue the 1990s-era bus for the appropriate establishing shot.”

It’s not a report to stop the presses, but it is an exciting hint at the kind of origin story that Ryan Coogler and his team are cooking up. While we wait to hear any word from Marvel, be sure to leave your impressions of this purported flashback scene via the comments section below.

Angled as Marvel’s final solo movie before Avengers: Infinity War, Black Panther has been slated for February 16, 2018, when Michael B. Jordan, Danai Gurira, Daniel Kaluuya, Winston Duke, and Florence Kasumba will round out the stellar ensemble.
