With a 2018 release window already in place, the official synopsis and cast list for Terrence Malick’s Radegund have now found their way online.

Word comes by way of Screen Daily, confirming that David Garrett’s Mister Smith Entertainment will handle international sales for Radegund which, it should be noted, is simply a working title for the time being and is therefore subject to change. Currently brewing in post-production, the film’s logline reveals that Malick’s wartime drama will chronicle the true story of Franz Jägerstätter, an Austrian farmer and conscientious objector who defied Hitler and followed his wife on the path of resistance.

Heralding Malick’s first WWII feature since The Thin Red Line, we understand Radegund‘s ensemble cast is headed up by August Diehl, Valerie Pachner, Matthias Schoenaerts, Bruno Ganz, Martin Wuttke, Maria Simon, Karin Neuhäuser, and Alexander Fehling. Contrary to previous reports, there’s no mention of either Jürgen Prochnow or Michael Nyqvist.

Here’s the official synopsis:

Opening at Jägerstätter’s home in the idyllic Austrian countryside, the film follows Franz and his wife, Fani, along their path of resistance. Told through real wartime letters, this love story finds the couple in conflict with the members of their close-knit town, their church, their government, and even their friends — all of which brings them to a dramatic choice.

After engineering the one-two punch of Knight of Cups and space documentary Voyage of Time in 2016, Terrence Malick will soon be prepping Song To Song for its world premiere at SXSW 2017 – a theatrical release is also scheduled for March 17th. Radegund, meanwhile, is aligned for release sometime in 2018, and we’ll be keeping you posted as Malick’s WWII pic begins to coalesce.
