American Horror Story is a series that’s notorious for secrecy – heck, the plot and setting of its most recent season, Roanoke, was a smokescreen of misdirection and red herrings right up until the moment it premiered on FX. Ditto for the show’s planned crossover season, but thanks to Entertainment Weekly, we now have a clearer sense of what to expect when AHS goes meta.

EW caught up with series creator Ryan Murphy, and though the creative concedes that the planned crossover isn’t happening “anytime soon,” Murphy did confirm that it’ll pluck a character from American Horror Story‘s opening season and throw them further down the series timeline. We already know that characters from both Coven and Murder House will cross paths, and it appears Murphy and the creative team have earmarked both season 1 and season 3 of AHS as the two principal pieces of connective tissue.

Per Entertainment Weekly:

“It’s a character from Season 1 that will be thrust into the world that you are left with at the end of Coven, which is sort of like the male/female/witch academy. And then all of those characters will intertwine, which is confusing because some of them are from Seasons 1 and 3. Like, Sarah Paulson will probably be playing 18 characters.”

It’ll be “very bizarre,” whatever the outcome, and while there are no concrete story details to report at this point, longtime fans of AHS can look forward to Murphy and Co. tearing up the rule book further down the line. The focus for now remains on American Horror Story season 7, which will take place in the present day.

“It’s not going to be next season, but we are going to do a season that’s a crossover between Murder House and Coven together, which is very bizarre,” the executive producer said at the time.

Following its two-season renewal, American Horror Story has secured its place on FX right up until 2019.
