A deal has been signed with Paramount Pictures and Skydance Productions for Tom Cruise to star as Jack Reacher, in an adaptation of One Shot. The Jack Reacher series is written by novelist Lee Child and the film will be written and directed by Oscar winner Christopher McQuarrie.

For those who are not familiar with Jack Reacher, he is a former military policeman who gets himself involved in a series of unfortunate events, catching up with old enemies and people he investigated whilst in the army. One Shot is the ninth book in the series and sees Reacher roped in to investigate the case of a man convicted of killing 5 people via sniper rifle.

Admittedly despite being a fearsome action star in the Mission: Impossible franchise, Tom Cruise is perhaps an ill fitting choice for Reacher. While Cruise is fairly nimble and small, Jack Reacher is a very imposing man of strength and skill.

Standing at 6′ 5″ and built like a brick shithouse, he would dwarf Cruise who only stands at 5′ 7″. It seems a tad silly but I imagine they will make it work. McQuarrie and Cruise have worked together before on Valkyrie and more recently McQuarrie did some script work on Mission: Impossible Ghost Protocol.

The film is expected to start up shooting in the fall before Tom Cruise goes to Oblivion.
