Has J.J. Abrams Already Begun Work On Cloverfield 4?

Many, many franchises in Hollywood can be considered mysterious, with a heavy curtain of secrecy draped over them to keep audiences in the dark and guessing up until the next film hits theaters. Whether it's Marvel, Star Wars or DC, to name but a few, secrecy is nothing new when it comes to movies, but few franchises are quite as mysterious as the Cloverfield one.

Many, many franchises in Hollywood can be considered mysterious, with a heavy curtain of secrecy draped over them to keep audiences in the dark and guessing up until the next film hits theaters. Whether it’s Marvel, Star Wars or DC, to name but a few, secrecy is nothing new when it comes to movies, but few franchises are quite as mysterious as the Cloverfield one.

It all began in 2008 with J.J. Abrams’ unique and clever thriller that took everyone by storm. While many assumed at the time that it was a one and done affair, 2016 saw the release of the excellent 10 Cloverfield Lane, proving that a franchise was about to unfold before our very eyes. Next up, there’s the intriguing God Particle, a film due to hit theaters in October which is the third entry into this exciting series.

Now, we’re hearing of yet another Cloverfield movie. Or at least, that’s what speculation is pointing to after Variety reported tonight that Son of a Gun helmer Julius Avery has signed on for a project named Overlord, which is being produced by Abrams. It’s said to be a WWII thriller that follows a mission to “sabotage a German tower during D-Day,” one which will also find the protagonists fighting “supernatural forces that are a result of a secret Nazi experiment.”

While not confirmed just yet, Overlord certainly sounds like it could tie into the Cloverfield universe, given its bizarre and mysterious sounding plot and Abrams’ involvement. Not to mention that Avery is an up and coming director much like Dan Trachtenberg, who helmed 10 Cloverfield Lane and Julius Onah, who’s in charge of God Particle.

It’s all just speculation for now, to be sure, but you can’t deny the possibility that it sounds like there’s a lot more to Overlord than meets the eye. We’re not saying that it’s going to be a direct sequel to what’s come before, but we wouldn’t be at all surprised if there’s some kind of connection between this film and the three other instalments in the franchise.

What do you make of all this, though? Could Overlord really be Cloverfield 4? If so, how do you think it’s connected to the rest of the films? Take to the comments section below and give us your thoughts!
