As if there was ever any doubt that 2017 was shaping up to be a banner year for blockbusters, Super Bowl LI has served as a timely reminder of what Hollywood’s major studios have in store for the summer season.
Amid new looks at Transformers: The Last Knight, Life, The Fate of the Furious and Rupert Sanders’ live-action Ghost in the Shell movie, Disney has now unearthed the latest promo for Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, and it seems Captain Jack Sparrow is a wanted man (again!). Hunted across the seven seas by the malevolent Salazer (Javier Bardem), Johnny Depp’s swashbuckling hero sets sights on the Trident of Poseidon – a MacGuffin among MacGuffins – in his quest to imprison Captain Salazer and his undead army in the Devil’s Triangle once more.
Here’s the official synopsis:
“Johnny Depp returns to the big screen as the iconic, swashbuckling anti-hero Jack Sparrow in the all-new ‘Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales.’ The rip-roaring adventure finds down-on-his-luck Captain Jack feeling the winds of ill-fortune blowing strongly his way when deadly ghost sailors, led by the terrifying Captain Salazer (Javier Bardem), escape from the Devil’s Triangle bent on killing every pirate at sea – notably Jack.
“Jack’s only hope of survival lies in the legendary Trident of Poseidon, but to find it he must forge an uneasy alliance with Carina Smyth (Kaya Scodelario), a brilliant and beautiful astronomer, and Henry (Benton Thwaites), a headstrong young sailor in the Royal Navy. At the helm of the Dying Gull, his pitifull small and shabby ship, Captain Jack seeks not only to reverse his recent spate of ill fortune, but to save his very life from the most formidable and malicious foe he has never faced.”
Though the fiery rivalry between Bardem and Depp will no doubt anchor Disney’s blockbuster sequel, Dead Men Tell No Tales also has room in its ranks for Kevin R. McNally as Joshamee Gibbs, Golshifteh Farahani as the sea-witch Shansa, David Wenham as Scarfield, Stephen Graham as Scrum, and Geoffrey Rush as the irreverent Captain Hector Barbossa.
Franchise newcomers Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg will steer Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales into theaters on May 26th.
