Feige Addresses Marvel Villain Criticisms; Promises Plenty Of Thanos In Infinity War

Marvel Studios movies appear to be pretty much critic-proof these days, though if there's one thing they're frequently called out on, it's the villains. Whiplash, Yellowjacket, Malekith, Crossbones; the list of bad guys who weren't handled well goes on and on, and in a new interview, head honcho Kevin Feige confirmed that the studio is well aware of the complaints.

Despite the fact that Captain America: Civil War‘s Zemo was a definite improvement, many fans are understandably concerned about just how well Thanos is going to fare in Avengers: Infinity War, and it appears as that’s something the studio is taking into consideration – thankfully.

Marvel has been building up to the Mad Titan taking on a big role in their Marvel Cinematic Universe ever since 2012, so Feige’s comments about Josh Brolin having a meaty role in the massive ensemble is definitely welcome news. In fact, it sounds like we can expect a huge chunk of the action in Avengers: Infinity War to revolve around Thanos.

“Well, I mean, it always varies, but it always starts with what serves the story the most and what serves the hero the most. We’ve been criticized, if a big criticism of ours is that we focus on the heroes more than the villains, I think that’s probably true. I don’t think it will always be true and I think some of you spoke to Chris and Steve at the Civil War junket. When the heck was that, yesterday? Last week? And they talked about, in appropriately oblique terms, Thanos. Thanos in Infinity War is, you know, in a movie that has a lot of characters, you could almost go so far as to say he is the main character, and that’s a bit of a, that’s a bit of a departure from what we’ve done before, but that was appropriate for a movie called Infinity War.”

That’s definitely good to hear, and a step in the right direction for Marvel’s villains. So many of their antagonists have been paper thin, so Thanos not following suit is a big relief. It also makes sense that he’ll receive a lot of screen time in the upcoming flick, given what’s set to go down. Whether the studio will actually come through with this or not remains to be seen, but it’s still nice to hear that Feige is well aware of their “villain problem” and we’re hopeful that they actually do something to fix it in time for Avengers: Infinity War.
