It’s “Definitely A Possibility” That Nintendo Switch Could See A 2D Zelda Game, Says Aonuma

The eyes and ears of every The Legend of Zelda fan across the globe may be fixated on any and all details surrounding the impending arrival of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, but with the long-awaited Wii U and Switch title coming so early in the latter's lifecycle, one can only assume that we'll be seeing Link in at least one more game for the console before its time is up. Exactly what shape such a project would take is anyone's guess, but it could well prove to be a 2D affair if recent comments made by series producer Eiji Aonuma are anything to go by.

The eyes and ears of every The Legend of Zelda fan across the globe may be fixated on any and all details surrounding the impending arrival of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, but with the long-awaited Wii U and Switch title coming so early in the latter’s lifecycle, one can only assume that we’ll be seeing Link in at least one more game for the console before its time is up. Exactly what shape such a project would take is anyone’s guess, but it could well prove to be a 2D affair if recent comments made by series producer Eiji Aonuma are anything to go by.

In an interview with Game Informer, Aonuma was asked if he had ever considered merging Breath of the Wild‘s development team with that of The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds‘ team, to which he responded: “The 3DS team and the Wii U team have different approaches to game development, so I don’t necessarily want to combine them and have them think together, but rather have each think about what they can bring to Nintendo Switch from their own perspective.”

When posed with the question of whether the 3DS Zelda team is working on a dedicated Switch title, Aonuma replied with “Yes, there is definitely a possibility.” It’s interesting to see that Aonuma would prefer to keep two different handlers of the Zelda franchise separate, preferring to let each one create unique experiences rather than homogenize them into one entity, and considering the runaway success of A Link Between Worlds, a follow-up on Switch could prove to be fantastic.

We’ll just have to wait and see what the Big N comes up with. As for the immediate future, Nintendo Switch and Breath of the Wild both launch March 3.
