While they’re not restricted to the beat ’em ups, some of the most successful crossover franchises in gaming history have been born out of the genre, but there’s one potentially massive collaboration that’s yet to happen. In a recent interview with IGN, NetherRealm Studios creative director and co-creator of the Mortal Kombat series Ed Boon was quizzed over the possibility of Scorpion, Sub-Zero and the rest of the MK crew going up against the cast of Capcom’s Street Fighter series, to which he had an interesting reply.
“I’d have to entertain it,” says Boon, in response to being asked if he’d be up for the collaboration if Capcom were to ever make the offer, although he believes such a project would never be able to “satisfy everybody,” due to the massive fanbases both franchises command. One such obstacle that would have to be overcome would be the decision on who would handle development duties, says Boon, admitting that at least one side would “have to sacrifice something,” which could ultimately end up putting fans from one or both camps off playing it.
Boon’s comments are certainly insightful, and they immediately recall the ill-fated Street Fighter X Tekken, a title that was developed by Capcom and envisioned to be the first of a two-part collaboration between the former and Tekken developer Bandai Namco. Presumably due to lower than expected sales, a sequel – which would have likely been called Tekken X Street Fighter – never came to fruition, a result that may have deterred Capcom from attempting anything similar in the future.
