Logan is very much its own film. That’s not to say it’s completely disconnected from the wider X-Men cinematic universe, but for the most part, it’s a standalone experience, one which thankfully isn’t tied down by having to plant seeds for future entries in the series or explain events that have already occurred. There are small connections here and there though, one of which is related to Essex Corp and Mister Sinister.
In the post-credits scene for X-Men: Apocalypse, which you can see above, the iconic villain was briefly teased and after having been rumored to be appearing in the franchise for a while now, many thought we’d finally get to meet him in Logan. It’s not a spoiler to say that doesn’t happen, but there still is a small string attaching him to the events in James Mangold’s film. We’re talking about X-23, of course.
Speaking to Cinema Blend in a recent interview, producer Simon Kinberg noted that Essex Corp did have a hand in creating the young mutant, and also revealed that there are still plans in place to introduce Mister Sinister into the cinematic universe that Fox is building.
“The short answer is yes. We would love to see Sinister. I think he is one of the great untapped villains in the X-Men universe, and we do have plans to introduce him into the world.”
Kinberg wouldn’t say where the villain would make his debut, but at this point, X-Men: Supernova seems like the best bet, given that we can’t see them squeezing him into something like New Mutants or X-Force. Of course, it’s also unclear who would play the character, but last we heard, Bryan Cranston was interested and he’d certainly be a solid pick if they can grab him. Not to mention that his casting would surely please fans.
While Fox is still keeping pretty tight-lipped on the future of the X-Men franchise when it comes to the main series, it’s becoming apparent that they’ve got big plans in store for us, and even with the departure of both Hugh Jackman and Patrick Stewart after Logan, the next few years still look quite promising for our beloved mutants.
