After making his debut in Doctor Strange last year, Benedict Cumberbatch’s Sorcerer Supreme looks set to play a big role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe moving forward. For starters, he’ll show up in Thor: Ragnarok in November, while he’s also going to appear in Avengers: Infinity War and its currently untitled sequel further down the road.

Considering the fact that Strange is walking around with an Infinity Stone around his neck (the Eye of Agamotto), it makes sense that he’ll play an important role in the fight against Thanos, and in a new interview, Cumberbatch weighed in on how he’s feeling about taking on such a major part here.

“What else could I be expected to say except that I’m thrilled. I feel like I’ve said it all before. It’s very exciting, it was great to be in origin film that’s done this well and I really enjoyed playing him, and even with the reshoots we did, it was great fun to put that costume and persona back on again, so I’m very excited to carry him forward. That’s all I can really say today, you know. But I’m genuinely really, really excited. I’ve got a lot of fun to look forward with the Infinity Wars and I’m sure with his own standalone film again.”

The actor then went on to briefly comment on working with Chris Hemsworth and Tom Hiddleston in Thor: Ragnarok as well as dropping some hints about some of the other Avengers he’ll be crossing paths with in Infinity War next year.

“Yeah, and you get a hint of that, obviously, with the tease during the credits sequence. That was great fun to do, and of the Avengers that I’ve met I’d love to work with all of them, I don’t really have any favorites but they’re terrific actors.”

With Robert Downey Jr.’s contract nearing its end, it’s feasible that Strange could become the new face of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, especially given the actor’s popularity. After all, Earth’s Mightiest Heroes will need some magical backup if they hope to take down the Mad Titan, and Strange saving the day – or at least playing a key role in doing so – makes perfect sense.
