Scarlett Johansson Says Not To Expect A Black Widow Movie Update Until After Avengers: Infinity War

The demand for a Black Widow movie from fans has been clear for years now, and Marvel Studios is finally beginning to take notice. However, before committing to anything, it appears as if they're waiting to see how female-led superhero flicks like Wonder Woman and Captain Marvel perform. That makes perfect sense, and in a recent interview, Scarlett Johansson noted that we won't be getting an update on a standalone feature for the hero until after Avengers: Infinity War.

Given her busy schedule, that’s definitely understandable, and with Joe and Anthony Russo’s upcoming blockbuster set to have a very lengthy production schedule, it’s hardly a surprise that the soonest we could see a Black Widow movie is in Phase 4. While chatting to MTV last night at the Oscars while on the red carpet, here’s what the actress had to say about it:

“I’m still trying to wrap my head around Infinity War which is like…the production is an infinity. And then I’ll let you know afterward.”

Whether or not a Black Widow movie will ever really happen depends on a number of factors. If Ghost in the Shell bombs, that’s going to seriously hurt Johansson’s box office credibility. It’s also hard to say how well general moviegoers would respond to a solo outing for the character, as it seems to be comic book fans who are really the ones that are most passionate about seeing the spy turned Avenger in her own film.

Still, Black Widow is a project that Marvel could easily make on a small budget, putting big CG action to one side in order to turn it into an espionage thriller. That’d be perfectly fine with us, but regardless of what Marvel ultimately decides, it seems that it’s going to be some time before we get anything substantial in the way of updates regarding the project. Once we hear more though, we’ll be sure to let you know.
