Drax’s Campfire Slurping Didn’t Make The Cut For Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2

That hilarious campfire scene featuring Drax's revolting slurping sounds? Turns out it won't feature in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.

That’s according to James Gunn himself, who revealed via Twitter that while the scene in question garnered its fair share of belly laughs, Drax’s table manners – or lack thereof – won’t rear their head in Guardians 2. It’s somewhat disappointing, of course; Dave Bautista’s braindead warrior has become something of a fan-favorite since he was first introduced to the MCU almost three years ago, but this practice of including scenes that aren’t featured in the finished product is something that’s becoming more and more commonplace in the film trailers of today.

Quite often it comes down to the 11th hour in the editing process, where directors, producers and VFX artists fine-tune their vision. There’s also examples when studio meddling and last-minute reshoots have factored into the equation, and one need only look to Rogue One: A Star Wars Story for a textbook example of a film that underwent significant changes during development and, quite remarkably, emerged from the other end largely unscathed as it went on to score upwards of $1 billion at the international box office.

For Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, though, the decision to remove Drax’s campfire exchange looks to have been a creative one. Here’s what James Gunn had to share on the matter:

Having floored the fortunate few who have already seen Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 via Marvel’s internal test screenings, excitement for James Gunn’s sci-fi sequel is beginning to reach a fever-pitch. May 5th is the date for your diaries, but what do you make of the director’s decision to nix Drax’s campfire scene? Let us know in the usual place.
